Power Dragons smoke the competition for a great cause

Mississippi Power’s Power Dragons claimed first place in the United Way of South Mississippi’s annual Dragon Boat Festival on Saturday, paddling to the fastest time in the event’s three-year history – 52.9 seconds – in the championship race.

While this year’s team featured some experienced rowers from previous years, most of the employees were new additions who “stepped up when called upon to stay in sync from the get-go to create an all-out team effort,” said Troy Helwig, buyer/analyst in Supply Chain and this year’s team captain.

The team met a couple of days before the race to go over safety protocol, proper rowing technique and strategic weight distribution before practicing for the first time together.

“It’s great working for a company that partners with organizations such as United Way and allows us to participate in events like these to help support a great cause,” Helwig said. “We spend a lot of time at work with our co-workers, so it’s great to build that camaraderie outside the office also. The fact that we won just made it extra special.
