The Gulfport Job Corps Center recently honored Mississippi Power with a Business Appreciation Award for “Outstanding Work-Based Learning Partner” during a luncheon in Gulfport.

Mississippi Power’s Community Development department established a partnership with the job center this year and has been working to provide mentorship, volunteer opportunities and job training to the local students.

Community Development Director Tommy Murphy and Senior Community Development Representative Frank Magee attended the business appreciation luncheon and received the award on behalf of the company.

Velecia Sims, Job Corps’ work-based learning coordinator, spoke during the event about the importance of business partnerships. “We are able to provide the students with real on-the-job training because of our business partners,” she said. “This is so beneficial for our students. This is why Job Corps works.”

Job Corps provides career and technical training to young people ages 16-24, with the goal of helping them learn the necessary skills for a lifetime career. The Gulfport job center offers programs in electrical, nursing and medical assistance, and medical office support.

“The Gulfport job center is a great partner and we appreciate the recognition we received,” Murphy said. “We hope to build on the work that we’re doing through mentorship and training opportunities so that we can help these students become a part of our community’s future workforce.”
